The lease said no pets, so Marta told the landlord the cat was a decorative object. He came to inspect. The cat sat on the windowsill and did not blink for eleven minutes. He wrote “ornament, ceramic” on the form and left. On the stairs he heard it sneeze and decided he had not.
Another small pour
My grandfather could smell rain two days out. He said it was the knee, then the shoulder, then finally the whole man. The morning of his funeral was cloudless, the forecast was cloudless, and at the graveside we all got soaked. Nobody had brought an umbrella. We had all learned to trust him.
